The availability of joined-up SDG data that is contextualized and more easily accessible holds great value for decision- makers, analysts and other stakeholders responsible for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. In this context, interoperability between data sources is key to integrate different sources of data, such as satellite imagery, telco data, and official statistics. Moreover, data interoperability can also promote closer collaboration and coordination between data producing bodies. From a user perspective, it enables diverse data sets published on multiple platforms to be “”federated”” and accessed through a single query.

This session will bring together stakeholders from the Collaborative for SDG Data Interoperability to share knowledge and examples of successful, replicable and scalable data interoperability solutions. The Collaborative itself was an outcome of the 1st UN World Data Forum and is jointly convened by the UN Statistics Division and Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data. It provides a platform for a diverse range of stakeholders to partner together to experiment with, and implement, new approaches and solutions to data interoperability challenges.

Expected outcome and follow-up from the session:

The focus of the session will be on using concrete examples to demonstrate the benefits of data interoperability as an approach to improving coordination, facilitating data integration and cross-ecosystem synergies to help both meet and monitor the SDGs. During the session, a Guide to Interoperability demonstrating examples of good practice drawn from the work of Collaborative members will be launched and its application discussed. The specific objectives for the session include:

  • Launching the Guide;
  • Showcasing innovative solutions and approaches developed by members of the Collaborative on SDG Data Interoperability; and
  • Inviting new partners to join in the implementation and adoption of innovative solutions to address SDG data interoperability challenges.
