This session brings together experts from Asia (India and Sri Lanka), Africa (Rwanda and Kenya), and Latin America(Colombia) to discuss the potential of harnessing south-south cooperation and peer learning in developing capacity to generate better data in the Global South, focusing on activities linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The experts, all part of a Southern-led network that applies new/non-traditional data sources for development innovations informed by local contexts and priorities, will share the opportunities and synergies that arise from cross-border collaboration to leverage the power of new data sources. The panel will also share best practices on innovating on data partnerships and collaborations with private sector companies and policy makers. The discussion would be balanced out by a critical perspective on issues related to application of big data techniques, governance of big data, legal and regulatory processes, and gendered dimensions of knowledge gained from traditional and alternative data sources.

Target Audience: National Statistics offices, Civil Society and Private Sector
