With so many international conferences, what makes the UN World Data UNWDF (UNWDF) different from other global gatherings? As we approach the fifth UNWDF in Medellín this November, I want to reflect on what sets this gathering apart and why it's continued to thrive.

A Platform for Inclusivity

Having been part of the UNWDF since its very first UNWDF in Cape Town in 2017 and now serving as co-chair for the second time, I can confidently say that the UNWDF has always been about inclusivity. What makes this event truly special is its ability to bring together such a broad and diverse group of stakeholders. Whether you're a small grassroots organization working on local data initiatives or a large international agency, you have a seat at the table. Everyone is welcome, and everyone’s voice is heard. This inclusivity has only grown stronger over the years. One of the highest praises I hear repeatedly about the UNWDF is that it gives everyone the opportunity to show their work, discuss their challenges, and build partnerships that extend far beyond the event itself. It’s not just about being in the room; it’s about collaborating and making long-term connections.

Relevancy in a Changing Data Ecosystem

In addition to its inclusive nature, the UNWDF has evolved significantly in terms of relevancy. As the data ecosystem has grown and become more complex, so has the UNWDF. When we held the first UNWDF in Cape Town, we weren’t talking about artificial intelligence, citizen-generated data, or some other cutting-edge topics now central to our discussions. But today, these are critical issues that will be featured prominently in Medellín. The UNWDF has successfully adapted to reflect the evolving needs and challenges of the global data community, making sure that it remains a platform where timely and important conversations happen.

Capturing Regional Energy

Another unique aspect of the UNWDF is its ability to capture the regional energy of the host country. From Cape Town to Dubai, Bern, Hangzhou, and now Medellín, each UNWDF comes with its own vibrancy of the region. This regional rotation ensures that we’re not just discussing global data issues in a vacuum; we’re grounding our conversations in the local context, learning from the region, and sharing lessons that are applicable around the world. This regional flavor is what helps the UNWDF feel fresh and dynamic every time.

A Growing Focus on Commitments

One of the most important shifts in recent years has been the growing focus on commitments. The UNWDF is not just a one-time event where people come together, exchange ideas, and go home. We’re now witnessing concrete and impactful actions emerge from the UNWDF, with organizations making commitments to strengthen data systems, foster partnerships, and drive change. This year, we’re building on that momentum through the Commit to Data campaign, which encourages groups to share their own commitments ahead of the UNWDF and showcase how they’re making data work for sustainable development. The UNWDF connects global initiatives, ensuring that our efforts are aligned and that we are all working toward shared goals.

So, what’s the answer to my opening question?

The UNWDF is unique because it’s a platform for action, inclusivity, and innovation. It’s a space where the global data community comes together not just to talk, but to co-create solutions that can drive real-world change.
