Revision: Rev.1

This new revision of recommendations on statistics of international migration addresses several contemporary developments: (a) the increased importance of international migration flows worldwide; (b) the greater heterogeneity and variety of migrant subcategories subsumed within the "long-term migrant" category, as internationally defined; and (c) the recognition that countries largely use their own definitions in collecting data and substantial analysis is needed to achieve international comparability. The new recommendations provide a means of integrating the varied types of information available. A framework is provided for improving the quality and the comparability of international migration statistics while facilitating the access of users to meaningful and sound information on key aspects of international migration. The recommendations were based on extensive consultation with national experts and collaboration among international organizations, including the United Nations, Eurostat, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, International Labour Organisation and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
