Abstract

The European System of Accounts (ESA 2010) is the newest internationally compatible EU accounting framework for a systematic and detailed description of the economies of the European member states. It was implemented in September 2014; from that date onwards the data transmission from Member States to Eurostat has followed ESA 2010 rules. It defines the accounting rules which European Union member states need to follow so that their economies can be described in quantitative terms in a consistent reliable and comparable manner. The structure of the ESA 2010 is consistent with the worldwide guidelines on national accounting set out in 2008 SNA.
