UN regional workshop on statistics of international trade in services

In 2010, the United Nations Statistical Commission adopted the Manual on Statistics of International Trade in Services (MSITS 2010) and requested the international community to make extra efforts in providing capacity building activities to developing countries. In this context UNSD organizes a training workshop on compilation issues of MSITS 2010 for Latin American countries from 11 to 14 December 2012 in Bogota, Colombia. The workshop is organized jointly with the national statistical office of Colombia and with support from the US Bureau of Economic Analysis. The agenda of the workshop will cover topics such as the general framework of MSITS 2010, the main data collection and data processing issues with special attention to enterprise surveys and the use of ITRS, the compilation issues related to measuring Travel services and Tourism-related international trade in services, the compilation of foreign affiliates statistics and some cross-cutting issues such as quality management, meta-data and the use of information technology.

Workshop on statistics of international trade in services

The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) in cooperation with the General Statistical Office of Vietnam is organizing a Workshop on Statistics of International Trade in Services for the South-East Asian countries. The workshop is organized within the framework of the UN/DESA Development Account project for the strengthening of the statistical capacity of countries in South East Asia.

The workshop will take place from 30 November until 3 December 2010 in Hanoi, Vietnam.

The objective of the workshop is to train representatives from national statistical offices and central banks of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Timor-Leste and Vietnam on the methodology of trade in services statistics and on current country-practices in compilation of trade in specific services sectors. The training focuses on both the interpretation of conceptual issues and options for the implementation of the international recommendations, taking account of country specific circumstances and facilitating the establishment of a network of statisticians among these South East Asian countries. The workshop reviews particularly the travel item and tourism statistics.

Workshop on statistics of international trade in services: challenges and good practices

The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) is organizing a workshop on statistics of international trade in services in the Latin American and the Caribbean countries in collaboration with the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE) and Banco Central do Brasil and Economic Commission of Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). The workshop will be hosted by the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE) in Rio de Janeiro between 1 and 4 December 2009.

The objective of the workshop is to train representatives from national statistical offices and central banks from the Latin American and Caribbean countries on methodological development of the statistics of trade in services and also the current country-practices in compiling trade in services statistics. The training will focus on both the interpretation of conceptual issues and options for the implementation of the international recommendations in country specific circumstances and facilitate the establishment of a network of statisticians in the participating countries working on service trade statistics.

Task force on statistics of international trade in services

The Interagency Task Force on Statistics of International Trade in Services (TFSITS) was established at the request of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and UNCTAD to the Statistical Commission in 1994. The Task Force is convened by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and consists of Eurostat, International Monetary Fund (IMF), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the World Trade Organization (WTO).

At its next meeting (19-20 November 2009) TFSITS is focusing on the finalization of the text of the revised Manual on Statistics of International Trade in Services 2010 (MSITS 2010) and to draft a report to be submitted for the approval of the UN Statistical Commission (SC) in 2010. TFSITS is to discuss the following topics: the implementation process of the revised manual, including preparing a compilation guidance; the quality of SITS data and comparability of databases at different international organizations; the promotion of MSITS 2010.

Meeting of the task force on international merchandise trade statistics (TFIMTS), 10-11 March 2009, and the joint session of the Inter-agency task forces on international merchandise trade statistics and of statistics of international trade in services 12 March 2009

The major item on the agenda of the Task Force on International Merchandise Trade Statistics (TFIMTS) will be the revision of the international recommendations on IMTS—the draft revised recommendations are scheduled to be submitted to the Statistical Commission for adoption at its forty-first session in 2010. The meeting will discuss the results of the first round of worldwide consultation and the recent virtual meeting of the Expert Group on IMTS as well as further work during 2009 and beyond (update of the compilers manual, implementation and critical issues for IMTS). Besides other methodological developments, issues related to trade databases and trade analysis are also on the agenda. The Joint Session of the Inter-Agency Task Forces on International Merchandise Trade Statistics and of Statistics of International Trade in Services will cover overlapping issues of trade in goods and services.

The Task Force on Statistics of International Trade in Services (TFSITS) will discuss the revision of the Manual on Statistics of International Trade in Services (MSITS) with the aim of submitting it for the approval of the UN Statistical Commission in 2010. The following items are also on the agenda of the TF: compilation guidance to support the use of the MSITS, problems of data quality and historical consistency and the experience and plans in ECLAC and APEC region, TFSITS web-site and newsletter, upcoming seminars and expert group meetings. The Joint Session of the Inter-Agency Task Forces on International Merchandise Trade Statistics and of Statistics of International Trade in Services will discuss the report from the Statistical Commission and the Working Group on the Impact of Globalization on National Accounts, Coverage of trade statistics—goods for processing and intra-firm trade of multinationals.

Workshop on statistics of international trade in services: challenges and good practices

The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), in collaboration with the State Statistics Committee of Ukraine and the Interstate Statistical Committee of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CISSTAT) is organizing a workshop on statistics of international trade in services in the CIS countries. The workshop will be hosted by the State Statistics Committee of Ukraine between 7 and 9 October 2008 in Kiev.  The workshop aims to train representatives from national statistical offices and central banks from the CIS countries on methodological development of the statistics of trade in services and also the current country-practices in compiling trade in services statistics. The training will focus on both the interpretation of conceptual issues and options for the implementation of the international recommendations in country specific circumstances and facilitate the establishment of a network of statisticians in the CIS countries working on service trade statistics.

Workshop for francophone African countries on the implementation of international recommendations for distributive trade statistics

This workshop is being organized by the UN Statistics Division in collaboration with the Economic and Statistical Observatory of Sub-Saharan Africa (AFRISTAT). The main purposes of the workshop are: (a) to present and discuss the IRDTS 2008; (b) to review the state of distributive trade statistics compilation in African countries; and (c) to identify the challenges and good practices in their collection, compilation and dissemination. The workshop will contribute to the preparation of future manuals that will provide practical guidance to compilers of distributive trade statistics. The workshop will be conducted in French.
