United Nations Regional Meeting on Disability Measurement and Statistics in support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 2020 World Population and Housing Census Programme

The UN Statistics Division, in collaboration with the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), and the National Centre for Statistics and Information of Oman organized the meeting with the following objectives: (i) to review and discuss national experiences, including challenges faced and lessons learned, to measure the population with disabilities during censuses of the 2010 round; (ii) to provide an opportunity to discuss strategies for compilation of data on disability for the monitoring of Sustainable Development Goals; and (iii) to foster intra-regional cooperation aimed at enhancing national capacity in disability measurement and improving the quality of data for monitoring the SDGs.

The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), in collaboration with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) of Oman, is organizing a Regional Meeting on Disability Measurement and Statistics in support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 2020 World Population and Housing Census Programme for Arabic speaking countries. This meeting is part of a series of regional meetings being organised in different regions of the world. Its objective is to review and discuss national experiences, including challenges faced and lessons learned, to measure the population with disabilities during censuses of the 2010 round. The Regional Meeting will also provide an opportunity to discuss strategies for compilation of data on disability for the monitoring of Sustainable Development Goals. Furthermore, the Regional Meeting will foster intra-regional cooperation aimed at enhancing national capacity in disability measurement and improving the quality of data for monitoring the SDGs.

Joint GCC-STAT/UNSD Regional Workshop on International Merchandise Trade Statistics

The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) and the Statistical Centre for the Cooperation Council for the Arab Countries of the Gulf (GCC-Stat) are jointly organizing a Regional Workshop on International Merchandise Trade Statistics in Muscat, Oman from 7 to 10 February, 2016. The objective of the workshop is to improve the understanding of international recommendations on international merchandise trade statistics and to share hands-on experiences in data acquisition, data compilation strategies (including data standardization and checking), data quality framework and data analysis and dissemination among trade statistics compilers.

Training for trainers on energy statistics and balances in the Arab region

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN ESCWA) is organizing a Training for trainers on Energy Statistics and Balances in the Arab region on 9-13 March 2014 in Muscat, Oman. The training is organized in cooperation with the Statistical Center for the Cooperation Council for the Arab countries of the Gulf (GCC Stat), the International Energy Agency and UNSD. The aim of the workshop is (a) to build capacity of experts in energy statistics to collect basic energy statistics and compile energy balances and (b) to review the links between energy statistics and energy accounts, energy efficiency indicators and CO2 emissions. UNSD staff will participate as a resource person in the training.

Seminar on the implementation of the System of national accounts 2008 in the Western Asia region

This seminar is organised by UNSD/DESA, in collaboration with UNESCWA and the GCC Secretariat, to develop a programme for the implementation of the System of National Accounts 2008 (2008 SNA) for countries in the ESCWA region. The seminar is hosted by the Sultanate of Oman.

The purpose of the seminar is to initiate the formulation of an implementation programme for the 2008 SNA and supporting economic statistics with the objective of developing comparable economic statistics for member states in the ESCWA region as a whole to monitor the integration of their economies. It is expected that this initiative would lead to a multi-year programme to move the countries over to the 2008 SNA and to establish a minimum common data set of annual and high frequency statistics.
