United Nations Regional Workshop on the 2020 World Programme on Population and Housing Censuses: International Standards and Contemporary Technologies

The main objective of the workshop is to introduce two recently revised international guidelines; the Principles and Recommendations for Population and Housing Censuses (Revision 3) and the Handbook on the Management of Population and Housing Censuses (Revision 2), and the standards, concepts and methods contained therein in order to facilitate national planning and preparations for 2020 round censuses. The workshop will also provide a forum for reviewing national experience in, and document good practices on, the use of contemporary technologies including those for census mapping and data collection.

Workshop on updated and new recommendations for International Merchandise Trade Statistics (IMTS 2010) and their implementation in countries of the Sub-Saharan Africa region

This workshop on the updated and new recommendations for international merchandise trade statistics (IMTS) and their implementation in countries of the Sub-Saharan Africa region is organized by UNSD in cooperation with the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). Participants will learn about the new and updated recommendations and share their experiences in the compilation of IMTS and the implementation of the international recommendations (old and new) on IMTS, also with view on identifying issues and best practices for inclusion in the updated IMTS Compilers Manual.

Workshop on manufacturing statistics for African countries

The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) is organizing a Workshop on Manufacturing Statistics, in collaboration with the Central Statistical Office (CSO) of Zambia, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The workshop will take place from 4 to 7 May 2009 in Lusaka, Zambia.

The workshop is part of UNSD's efforts to increase statistical capacity building in the region and as such relates to the framework of the project “Strengthening statistical capacity building in support of progress towards the Internationally Agreed Development Goals in the Southern African Development Community region”, while reaching out to other countries in the region as well.

The main purpose of this workshop is to initiate a programme for the development of comprehensive and comparable manufacturing statistics for African countries. As a first step in this programme, the workshop will review the state of manufacturing statistics in participating African countries including scope, definitions, measurement and methodology used in the compilation of manufacturing statistics.
