Workshop on the Operation of Civil Registration, Vital Statistics and Identity Management Systems for East Asian Countries

The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) organizing a Workshop on the Operation of Civil Registration, Vital Statistics and Identity Management Systems for East Asian Countries. The workshop will be conducted from 13 to 17 November 2017 in Hanoi, Vietnam.
This workshop is intended to go in depth into the issues of implementing the Principles and Recommendations for a Vital Statistics System, Revision 3, promulgated in 2014. With the view of strengthening technical capacity, the workshop will increase the knowledge of statisticians, civil registration and/or identity management officials and health officials about the revised Handbook on civil registration and vital statistics systems: management, operation and maintenance; and improve their capability in identifying obstacles and challenges for achieving complete coverage of their systems.
The workshop will also provide a forum for exchange of national experiences in evaluating vital statistics and discussing the capacity of participating countries to deliver quality national vital statistics for international compilation and dissemination. Current practices for setting up a holistic framework that encompasses Civil Registration, Vital Statistics and Identity Management Systems will be reviewed.
Measuring progress towards achieving a green economy

UN DESA’s Statistics Division is organizing a regional training workshop within the UN Development Account project “Supporting Developing Countries Measure Progress Towards Achieving a Green Economy” in cooperation with the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).
Key elements of the workshop will cover four main statistical domains, namely environment, agriculture, energy statistics, and statistics on new themes related to green economy (e.g. environmental goods and services, green jobs).
The contents of each of the fields cover the following: general introduction to the theme; main frameworks and international recommendations covering these fields; internationally agreed definitions and metadata for selected statistics underlying green economy indicators; and detailed description and compilation methods for selected indicators from the reference green economy indicators list of the project.
The workshop will also finalize the discussion on the direct technical assistance to the pilot countries that will take place in the months following this workshop.
Forum of experts in the SEEA Experimental Ecosystem Accounting

As part of the project “Advancing the SEEA Experimental Ecosystem Accounting in pilot countries”, the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme and Convention of Biological Diversity Secretariat are working in close collaboration with the General Statistics Office of Vietnam to develop a National Plan for advancing environmental-economic accounting in Vietnam, with the objective to strengthen the national statistical system in support of developing an information system for sustainable development through the development of comparable environmental-economic accounts, including ecosystem accounts to support policy decisions.
A UNSD-led mission in Vietnam from 6 to 10 April 2015 will hold bilateral consultations and a high-level segment with Vietnamese officials, representatives of international organizations and other relevant stakeholders, with the objective to obtain high-level endorsement of the National Programme of Work.
A national training workshop will also be held to increase capacity for the implementation of environmental economic accounts in various ministries in Vietnam.
Workshop on census evaluation

UNSD will conduct the Workshop on Census Evaluation, in collaboration with General Statistics Office of Viet Nam, in Hanoi, Viet Nam, from 2 to 6 December 2013. The regional workshop will bring together some fifteen national statisticians from eight Asian countries.
The main purpose of the workshop is to provide the staff of national statistical offices with hands-on training to master indirect demographic techniques necessary for the evaluation of census results. Participants will learn, in particular, the methods to evaluate age-sex structure of population, fertility as well as mortality data obtained from national population and housing censuses. Participants are also expected to establish own professional networks through exchange of experiences and knowledge on census data analyses.
Workshop on environment statistics for the South-East Asian countries

The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), in cooperation with the General Statistics Office of Viet Nam, will organize a Workshop on Environment Statistics for the South-East Asian countries from 5 to 7 December 2011 in Hanoi, Viet Nam. This workshop is being organized within the framework of the UNDESA Development Account Project on Building Statistical Capacity in the Low Income Countries of South-East Asia.
This workshop is aimed at assisting the participating countries by providing the fundamentals of environment statistics from the global and national perspectives, while learning more closely about the environmental challenges and statistical needs from the countries; introducing the Framework for the Development of Environment Statistics, the Core Set of Environment Statistics and the UNSD/UNEP Questionnaire on Environment Statistics. The need for environment statistics and indicators, methodological developments, global data collections and international sources of environment statistics, as well as resources needed to engage in production of environment statistics will also be discussed at the workshop.
Participating countries will include the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam (host), the Kingdom of Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste and the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.
Workshop on statistics of international trade in services

The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) in cooperation with the General Statistical Office of Vietnam is organizing a Workshop on Statistics of International Trade in Services for the South-East Asian countries. The workshop is organized within the framework of the UN/DESA Development Account project for the strengthening of the statistical capacity of countries in South East Asia.
The workshop will take place from 30 November until 3 December 2010 in Hanoi, Vietnam.
The objective of the workshop is to train representatives from national statistical offices and central banks of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Timor-Leste and Vietnam on the methodology of trade in services statistics and on current country-practices in compilation of trade in specific services sectors. The training focuses on both the interpretation of conceptual issues and options for the implementation of the international recommendations, taking account of country specific circumstances and facilitating the establishment of a network of statisticians among these South East Asian countries. The workshop reviews particularly the travel item and tourism statistics.
