The Statistical Commission in its 44th session in 2013 endorsed the establishment of the Expert Group on Environment Statistics (EGES) to collaborate with UNSD in the work of developing further methodological tools, hands-on guidance, and training material and to contribute to the implementation of the FDES 2013 in countries. These tools are being constructed sequentially in time, as components of a toolkit of the FDES 2013.
The EGES was convened in 2014 and it comprises experts on environment statistics and related areas from all geographical regions. The EGES meets regularly every year to review the progress made in the methodological guidance tools under construction and discuss the way forward. Complementarily, during each calendar year, the EGES organizes its works remotely through smaller teams tasked with specific areas of work.
Currently, the main product being developed jointly by the EGES is the Manual on the Basic Set of Environment Statistics that will consist of methodology sheets for the different topics and components of the FDES, and which will provide detailed methodological guidance including definitions, classifications, statistical methods for collection and/or compilation, dissemination and main uses of the sets of the respective environment statistics.
