Water Accounts

   About Water Accounts

Water has been identified by the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) as a priority area for implementation of the SEEA. SEEA-Water, a SEEA 'sub-system', provides compilers and analysts with agreed concepts, definitions, classifications, tables, and accounts for water and water-related emission accounts. The United Nations Statistical Commission adopted Part I of SEEA-Water as an interim international statistical standard at its 38th session in 2007.

SEEA-Water expands and elaborates on guidance on accounting included in the International Recommendations for Water Statistics (IRWS). IRWS was developed to consolidate the experiences and practices of countries and international organisations into a common and practical set of statistical guidelines. IRWS was adopted by the United Nations Statistical Commission at its 41st session in 2010.

UNSD provides support to national statistical agencies on developing water statistics and accounts through an inter-regional advisor. Please contact us for information on these services.

For water indicators and statistics visit the Environment Statistics Section of UNSD.
