Classification structure
2 (a)Please describe the structure of the classification: How many levels does the classification have? (Please provide labels, such as “Division”, “Class”) How many categories exist at each level?The classification has five levels, that are described below:
1st Level - Section: 21 items
2nd Level - Division: 87 items
3rd Level - Group: 285 items
4th Level - Class: 673 items, each class has a verifier digit
5th Level - Subclass: 1301 items (it was elaborated to public administration purposes)

Relationship to international standards
3 (a)Is this classification based on (or linked to) an international standard classification? If yes, please describe.It is based on International Standard Industrial Classification Revision 4.
3 (b)Is the classification structure identical to the international standard or, if not, how does it differ? (e.g. have additional levels been added to the international standard or have changes been made within the level of the international structure, such as aggregations or additional breakdowns)First and second levels: they are identical to the international standard - ISIC Rev.4.
Third and fouth levels (grops and classes) : CNAE/Brazil introduces more details, but even in these cases, there are few exceptions. Aggregation of CNAE/Brazil groups and classes recomposes ISIC Rev.4 groups and classes.
3 (c)Please describe deviations from the international standard (in terms of structure, methodology or application rules). Please use examples, if a general statement is not possible.As we have explained in item 3 (b), CNAE/Brazil structure is identical to ISIC Rev. 4. However, it introduces additional groups and classes.

CNAE first and second levels have the same stucture and the same codes. There is only one exception, that is: section T, division 98.

CNAE/Brazil allocates alcohol fuel derived from sugarcane on Division 19 and ISIC allocates it on Division 20.

3 (d)At what level of the international standard can data be reported for international comparison? (Please provide examples of programmes / indicators if reporting takes place at different levels of the classification.)It can be reported at first and second levels.

Classification uses

All data is collected at class level, and depending on the survey, and its necessity, (country region, activity, number of employees) it can be published according to division, group or class.

Outside Statistical Office there are users of CNAE.

4 (b)Please give the names of institutions that use the classification for non-statistical purposes (as opposed to statistical purposes in question 4(a)). Also indicate the kind of use (e.g. tax offices, social security, customs, enterprise register, employment services, work permits etc.)It is used by Federal, State and Local (Municipal) Government.

Administrative records and file purposes:
Union tax offices, social security, labor market regulation and benefits, enterprise register. It is also used by State and local tax offices, enterprise register, local control and regulation of land using, drugs and food control, environment regulations, etc.

4 (c)Please indicate if alternative classifications are used by other institutions of the economy. Are these classifications available and useful for the Statistical Office?No, there is no alternative classifications.
Implementation / revision status

CNAE/Brazil revision occurred due statistical need to align it with ISIC Rev. 4

Implementation in Statistical System

Economic annual surveys:
Agricultural Census: agriculture, animal production and foresty census - since 2007

Business Register: since January 2008 (2007 was a transition year)

Economic monthly indicators: since 2009

Population Census: since 2010

National Account: will be implemented in 2013, base year 2010

Household National Surveys: will be implemented in 2013

Household Sample Surveys: will be implemented in 2013
