Classifying Our World: Recent Developments in International Statistical Classifications

Introduction

UNSD, under the auspices of the UN Committee of Experts on International Statistical Classifications, is organizing a side event of the UNSC 57^th session, with the theme Classifying Our World: Recent Developments in International Statistical Classifications. The side event is scheduled for Thursday, 29 January 2026 from 9:00 am to 10:30 am (New York time) as a virtual event.

This side event spotlights the vital work of the UN Committee of Experts on International Statistical Classifications in coordinating and maintaining the international family of classifications. We will present the key updates and developments on several international statistical classifications to be submitted for endorsements at the 57^th session of the UN Statistical Commission, including: the Classification of Statistical Activities, Version 2.1 (CSA 2.1); the Standard International Energy Product Classification, Version 2.0 (SIEC Ver. 2.0); the Extended Balance of Payments Services Classification 2026 (EBOPS 2026); the International Statistical Classification on Alternative Care of Children (ICare) and the International Classification of Dying Places (ICP).
