Mandate
The mandate of the Conference on the Standardization
of Geographical Names is:
The Secretary-General has been requested by ECOSOC to provide
encouragement
and guidance to those nations which have no national organization
for the
- standardization and co-ordination
of national geographical names and for the
- collection
and dissemination of information concerning the technical
procedures and systems used in the standardized transliteration
of geographical names into the Roman and into other Non-Roman
scripts of other countries, to establish such an organization
to produce national gazetteers and to establish procedures
for the transliteration of national names into other scripts.
Important:
It is not the mandate of the Conference, to settle (political)
disputes
between states on the use (or nonuse) of particular geographical
names. The United Nations has neither authority to establish
geographical names nor to make adecision on "the correct use"
of a geographical name. Such disputes have to be referred back
to the countries concerned for their negotiation aiming at a
mutual agreement.
Symbols of United Nations documents are composed
of capital letters combined with figures. Mention of such
a symbol indicates a reference to a United Nations document.
