Lessons from a Decade of SDG Monitoring: Strengthening Global Frameworks for Acceleration to 2030

Over the past decade, SDG monitoring has reshaped official statistics, driving rapid methodological development, data innovation, and stronger partnerships across the global statistical system. The SDG Global Indicator Framework has expanded data availability, motivated disaggregation in support of the Leave No One Behind principle and positioned National Statistical Offices as data stewards coordinating national data ecosystems.

At the same time, implementing the framework has provided important insights. Tight timelines, ambitious and sometimes hard-to-measure targets, uneven methodological readiness, and the inherently complex nature of global goal setting have created challenges to effective monitoring. While the framework enabled unprecedented global tracking of progress, these challenges also highlight opportunities for more focused, usable, and timely data to accelerate action in the years to 2030.

Reflecting on these lessons can help strengthen global monitoring frameworks to better drive impact, accountability, and progress on the ground in the final years to 2030.

This webinar:

  • Presented key findings from the IAEG-SDGs Task Team on Lessons Learned from Monitoring the SDGs UNSC background document
  • Reflected on lessons learned from the development, implementation, and evolution of the SDG Global Indicator Framework to accelerate progress in the final years to 2030
  • Brought together perspectives from the IAEG-SDGs, countries, custodian agencies and stakeholders
  • Provided a space for dialogue on improving SDG monitoring to better support decision-making, accountability, and sustainable development.

Participants gained a clearer understanding of:

  • What has worked well in the SDG monitoring system and why;
  • Key challenges encountered in translating ambitious global goals into measurable indicators; and
  • Practical lessons to inform SDG acceleration

The webinar will contribute to ongoing reflections within the UN system and among Member States on lessons learned to overcome challenges in SDG monitoring and accelerate progress to 2030.
