Addressing specific NSO demands
Task Team 1 supports NSOs in identifying, prioritizing, and addressing their training needs through practical tools, guidance, and peer learning. Its work centers on promoting NSO-led capacity development by strengthening training planning, implementation, and knowledge exchange across countries. In response to expressed NSO needs, the task team has supported the development and rollout of the Statistical Training Assessment Tool (STAT).
About
Task Team 1 focuses on supporting National Statistical Offices (NSOs) in strengthening their training capacity through demand-driven, practical approaches. The team’s work recognizes that sustainable capacity development is most effective when NSOs lead the process, supported by structured in-house training systems complemented by external learning opportunities.
In response to expressed NSO needs, the task team has supported the development and rollout of the Statistical Training Assessment Tool (STAT), which helps organizations systematically assess staff training needs and translate assessment results into prioritized training plans. The tool is supported by guidance materials that outline the assessment process, approaches to prioritization, and options for implementing training, including in-house and facilitated learning.
The task team continues to promote the adoption, localization, and practical use of the STAT tool across countries, while facilitating peer learning and knowledge exchange among NSOs at different stages of implementation. Ongoing work also includes analysis of assessment results to inform broader capacity development efforts and alignment with existing global learning resources.
Workplan
Over the 2025-2026 period, Task Team 1 will focus on expanding the use and impact of the Statistical Training Assessment Tool across additional countries. Key activities include promoting adoption in new contexts, supporting translations to increase accessibility, and sharing knowledge through webinars and regional events.
The team will work closely with NSOs, UNSD, and GIST partners to support implementation, facilitate exchanges between countries at different stages of using the tool, and document practical approaches to developing training plans. In parallel, the task team will continue analyzing assessment findings and collaborating with other GIST task teams to strengthen links with existing learning materials and frameworks.
All activities are designed to reinforce NSO ownership, encourage peer learning, and support sustainable approaches to statistical capacity development.
