Translation Group

The Translation Group works to expand access to GIST learning materials by supporting structured, coordinated translation into multiple languages. Through shared frameworks and collaboration, the group helps ensure learning resources are accessible and usable across diverse country contexts.

About

The Translation Group supports the broader GIST initiative by improving access to learning materials through coordinated translation into multiple languages. Its work responds to the diverse linguistic needs of National Statistical Offices (NSOs) and related institutions, with an initial focus on expanding availability in widely used languages.

The group's primary role is to establish a practical and sustainable approach to translation. This includes developing frameworks and good practices covering language prioritization, coordination mechanisms, collaboration arrangements, and intellectual property considerations. Designated language coordinators help organize and oversee activities for each language, while translation work itself is carried out through volunteer contributions and institutional partnerships.

In parallel, the Translation Group enables and supports actual translation efforts by facilitating matchmaking between materials and contributors, exploring the use of machine translation combined with human review, and tracking available translated resources. Lessons learned from other organizations with experience in multilingual knowledge dissemination inform the group's approach, helping to ensure efficiency, quality, and scalability.

Workplan

The Translation Group's workplan focuses on establishing a coordinated approach to translation and supporting early translation activities. Initial efforts center on forming language-specific working groups and agreeing on methodologies for translating priority materials. This includes defining practical steps, roles, and quality-assurance processes.

As translation activities begin, the group will monitor progress, assess early results, and identify lessons learned to refine its approach. Periodic reviews will support continuous improvement and inform recommendations for future translation efforts. The workplan emphasizes collaboration, flexibility, and sustainability, laying the foundation for expanding access to GIST materials in multiple languages over time.
