Rates shown represent those rates at which the central bank either discounts or makes advances against eligible commercial paper and/or government securities for commercial banks or brokers. For countries with more than one rate applicable to such discounts or advances, the rate shown is the one at which the largest proportion of central bank credit operations is understood to be transacted.
The importance of these rates as instruments of monetary control varies considerably from country to country and inter-country comparisons should not be made without further investigation. |
