Joint UNSD/ ECLAC Workshop on Statistics of International Trade in Services

13 - 16 September 2005, Panama City

The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs' Statistics Division (UNSD) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (UNECLAC) are making a special effort to improve the availability of statistics of international trade in services from Latin American and Caribbean countries in view of constantly growing demand for such statistics from users worldwide including governments, businesses and international organizations. UNSD and UNECLAC are organizing a joint workshop on compilation of such statistics in Panama City, Panama from 13 to 16 September 2005.

The main purposes of the workshop will be to (i) review the current country practices in this area in light of the recommendations of the United Nations Statistical Commission as published in Manual on Statistics of International Trade in Services (Statistical Papers, Series M, No. 86, United Nations, 2002), (ii) identify main difficulties in establishing effective compilation mechanism, and (iii) make progress in finding solutions which would help to ensure compilation of the high quality data. Special attention will be devoted to country experiences in specific service categories and identification of the best practices in this area.
