Lunchtime Seminar

Framework for the Development of
Environment Statistics (FDES 2013)

Monday 25 February 2013, 1:15 - 2:30 pm
Conference Rm. C, Temporary North Lawn Building
United Nations, New York

The Statistical Commission at its 41st session in 2010 requested UNSD to carry out the revision of the 1984 Framework for the Development of Environment Statistics (FDES) to reflect developments of the last two and half decades and to establish a core set of environment statistics to assist countries at early stages of their environment statistics programmes. The revised Framework, the FDES 2013, will be presented to the 44th session of the Commission for endorsement together with a plan to put the FDES to work.

The FDES 2013 is a multi-purpose conceptual and statistical framework that is comprehensive and integrative in nature and marks out the scope of environment statistics. It provides an organizing structure to guide the collection and compilation of environment statistics at the national level. It brings together data from the various relevant subject areas and sources, covering the issues and aspects of the environment that are relevant for policy analysis and decision making.

The seminar will provide an opportunity for the participants of the Commission to get more familiar with the objective, scope, structure and contents of the FDES 2013, the outcome of the global consultation, and the process for selecting the core set of environment statistics including its pilot test in countries. It will also introduce a Blueprint for Action to make the FDES operational.
