International Definition and Measurement of Levels of Living (An Interim Guide)
Series: E, No.CN.3/270/Rev.1
Languages available:E, F, S
This historical document, issued in 1961, was the first to address comprehensively international concerns for comparable reporting of levels of living among countries. It suggests a set of basic components (subjects) of levels of living, indicators for each component, and additional basic indicators needed as background. It was prepared for use as an authoritative basic guide for governments, research organizations and others in the standardization and measurement of levels of living and provides invaluable information on early statistical thinking in this field. It superseded the 1954 report of a committee of experts, International Definition and Measurement of Standards and Levels of Living (E/CN.3/179- E/CN.5/299). The Guide was issued jointly by the United Nations, the International Labour Office, the Food and Agriculture Organization, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the World Health Organization.
