Series: F, No. 91
Sales number: 03.XVII.9
Languages:Click for help [Arabic][Chinese][English][French][Russian]; [Spanish]
Price: $15

Responding to the growing worldwide interest in the character and role of non-profit or civil society organizations, this publication provides guidelines for the development of a satellite account that presents detailed economic data on non-profit institutions within the framework of the System of National Accounts. The Handbook clarifies the definition of non-profit institutions and identifies a methodology for breaking out and aggregating the full range of non-profit institutions, both those currently reported in the SNA sector Non-Profit Institutions Serving Households and those assigned to other sectors. The proposed methodology also captures the contribution of volunteer labour utilized by non-profit institutions and suggests extensions to existing classification systems to differentiate more fully the various types of non-profit institutions.

National Accounts: A Practical Introduction

Series: F, No. 85
Sales number: E.04.XVII.4
Languages:Click for help [Arabic][Chinese][English][French][Russian][Spanish]
Price: $25

National Accounts: A Practical Introduction provides an introduction to some basic concepts and structures of the System of National Accounts (SNA) to economists and policy makers who are not familiar with national accounts, as well as other newcomers to the field of national accounting. The text may serve as a guide to reading the SNA itself. In that sense, the text is written in as simple a style as possible, and therefore the detailed elaboration of concepts in both theory and practice is avoided. Simple exercises are included, whenever possible, to make concepts and structures clearer to readers. The handbook also provides an example of the complete system in Excel so that readers can trace the linkages in the system by looking at the formulas there. A compilation spreadsheet that can be used for compiling national accounts is also developed as part of the development of the handbook. It has been tested and used in many developing countries. Those supplements are posted on the web page of the United Nations Statistics Division as part of the series Handbook of National Accounting.

An annex presents a provisional list of tourism-specific products as a reference for countries that wish to develop their own list. Comparisons of the System of National Accounts and the System of Balances of the National Economy, Part I: Conceptual Relationships

Series: F, No. 20, Part I
Sales number: 77.XVII.6
Languages:Click for help *[English]; *[French]; *[Russian]; *[Spanish]
This publication is part of a two part study of the relationships between the System of National Accounts (SNA), used in countries with market economies and the System of Balances of the National Economy (MPS), used in countries with centrally planned economies. Part one delineates the adjustments and steps required to convert the aggregates of SNA relating to the supply and disposition of goods and services and the incomes originating in production into the corresponding aggregates of MPS and vice versa. The scope of the conceptual framework and the amount of detail needed depend on the particular parts of the systems and on the aggregates and their subdivisions for which intersystem comparisons are considered meaningful. A series of tables shows the adjustments that need to be made for intersystem comparison and provide a basis for international reporting of data in terms of MPS concepts by countries using SNA and vice versa.------ Out of print.

Provisional International Guidelines on the National and Sectoral Balance-Sheet and Reconciliation Accounts of the System of National Accounts

Series: M, No. 60
Sales number: 77.XVII.10
Languages:Click for help *[English]; *[French]; *[Russian]; *[Spanish]
This publication contains detailed guidelines within the framework of SNA on balance-sheet and reconciliation accounts of institutional units only. The definition of the statistical units recommended for the balance-sheet accounts and their classification into institutional sectors are discussed in chapter IV. Chapter V proposes schemes of classification for assets and liabilities. The conceptual and practical problems of valuation of assets and liabilities and the entries in the reconciliation accounts, which concern the differences between the capital finance transactions during a period of account and the changes in the balance-sheet figures between the beginning and the end of the period, are discussed in chapters VI and VII. The standard accounts and supporting tables on balance sheets and reconciliations which should be added to the transactions accounts of SNA are shown in chapter VIII. Chapter IX contains a brief discussion of the statistical sources and practical problems of compiling balance-sheet and reconciliation data.------ Out of print.

Classification by Broad Economic Categories
Defined in terms of the SITC, Revision 3 and the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System (2002)

Series: M, No. 53/Rev.4
Sales number: 03.XVII.8
Languages:Click for help [Arabic][Chinese][English][French][Russian] [Spanish]
Price: $17.95
Revision: Rev.4

The original Classification by Broad Economic Categories (BEC) was produced in 1961 to provide a means for international trade statistics to be analyzed by broad economic categories such as food, industrial supplies, capital equipment, consumer durables and consumer non-durables. The original BEC was linked to the Standard International Trade Classification. Two revisions of BEC were produced to coincide with revisions of SITC, and a third revision made technical corrections. The current publication provides links between BEC and the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System (2002 edition) as well as to the basic classes of goods in the System of National Accounts (consumption goods, intermediate goods, capital goods). Each of the 3,121 SITC headings is correlated to one of the nineteen BEC basic headings, as are 5,222 of the 5,224 HS02 subheadings (two HS02 subheadings fall outside the scope of SITC, Rev.3 and are therefore not correlated to BEC).

The International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC) is the international reference classification of productive activities. Its main purpose is to provide a set of activity categories that can be utilized for the collection and reporting of statistics according to such activities. Since the adoption of the original version of ISIC in 1948, ISIC has provided guidance to countries in developing national activity classifications and has become an important tool for comparing statistical data on economic activities at the international level. Wide use has been made of ISIC, both nationally and internationally, in classifying data according to kind of economic activity in the fields of economic and social statistics, such as for statistics on national accounts, demography of enterprises, employment and others.

This fourth revision of ISIC (ISIC, Rev.4) is the outcome of a review process that spanned several years and involved contributions from many classifications experts and users around the world. This process resulted in an ISIC structure that is more detailed than the previous version, responding to the need to identify many new industries separately. The relevance of the Classification has been enhanced with the introduction of new high-level categories to better reflect current economic phenomena.
