United Nations Global Assessment on Availability, Periodicity, Timeliness and Disseminationof High Frequency Indicators

The data template and the request to undertake this global assessment on the availability, periodicity, timeliness and dissemination of high frequency indicators is the outcome of extensive consultations with countries and international organizations that took place at the International Seminar on Timeliness, Methodology, and Comparability of Rapid Estimates of Economic Trends in Ottawa from 27 to 29 May 2009. The report of the Seminar is available on the website of the Seminar.

The data template consists of 12 major categories covering national accounts, production and turnover indicators, prices, labour market indicators, sectoral indicators for the external, financial, government, non-financial and household sector, financial and real estate market indicators, and economic sentiment indicators. The data template is considered a good point of departure to analyse the turning points of global and national business cycles and to identify sectoral and market exposures and vulnerabilities of the global economy.

The aim of this base-line assessment is to gain insight in the availability of high frequency indicators at the country level and their data dimensions in terms of periodicity and , timeliness and dissemination and seeking global support and acceptance for the data template. The outcome of the assessment will be presented to the Statistical Commission of 2010 to deliberate the global statistical strategy in assisting countries in advancing a system of early warning and business cycle indicators.

Please note that we are inquiring about the availability of these indicators in the country in general and not necessarily those that are compiled and/or disseminated by your office. Therefore, you might like to contact your counterparts in the central bank, or other economic policy departments, and research institutions of banks, universities or business associations to obtain a complete national inventory including those indicators that are not broadly disseminated.

The Global Assessment should be completed by 21 October 2009 and can be accessed either:
- Online in English, French, Spanish or
- Electronically by filling out the questionnaire in English, French or Spanish and returning it by email to sna@un.org or by fax to 1 212 963 1374. Additional information for the completion of the questionnaire can be found in the guidelines, available in English, French or Spanish.

More background information about the data template and the indicators is available in the paper The Assessment of Dissemination Practices for Economic and Financial Statistics: Availability, Timeliness, Comparability of High Frequency Statistics and their Accelerated First Estimates in Measuring the Trends of the World Crisis.
