Standard Country or Area Codes for Statistical Use
Standard country or area codes and geographical regions for statistical
use
This site presents a list of the names of countries or areas in alphabetical
order, three-digit numerical codes used for statistical processing purposes
by the Statistics Division of the United Nations Secretariat and three-digit
alphabetical codes assigned by the International Organization for Standardization
(ISO). 1/ The composition of geographical regions
used by the Statistics Division in its publications and databases is also
shown. In addition, the annex tables show recent changes in numerical
codes.
This list of countries or areas includes those countries or areas for
which statistical data are compiled by the Statistics Division of the
United Nations Secretariat. The names of countries
or areas refer to their short form used in day-to-day operations of
the
United Nations and not necessarily to their official name as used in
formal documents. These names are based on Terminology Bulletin No.
347/Rev.1:
Country Names.2/ The geographical
regions and groupings of countries and areas included at this site are
not comprehensive but only a selection which are or may
be used in the compilation of statistics. In order to ensure consistency
in statistics and for convenience, each country or area is shown in
one
region only. The macro geographical regions are arranged to the extent
possible according to continents. Within these groupings more detailed
component geographical regions are shown.
The materials presented here are excerpted from the United Nations publication,
Standard Country or Area Codes for Statistical Use, Revision 4 (United
Nations publication, Sales No. 98.XVII.9 in English, French, Russian,
Spanish, Chinese and Arabic).
The designations employed and the presentation of material at this site
do not imply the expression of any opinion whatsoever on the part of the
Secretariat of the United Nations concerning the legal status of any country,
territory, city or area or of its authorities, or concerning the delimitation
of its frontiers or boundaries.
The assignment of countries or areas to specific groupings is for statistical
convenience and does not imply any assumption regarding political or other
affiliation of countries or territories by the United Nations.
The designations "developed" and developing" are intended for statistical
convenience and do not necessarily express a judgement about the stage
reached by a particular country or area in the development process.
Symbols of the United Nations documents are composed of capital letters
combined with figures.
