Technical note |
The United Nations and the United Nations specialized agencies have a common system of salaries, allowances and other benefits for their staff in the professional and higher categories. To preserve the equivalent purchasing power of emoluments worldwide, living costs of staff at a particular duty station are measured against such costs in New York City, the base of the system.
These measurements or indices are calculated by the International Civil Service Commission (ICSC).
The retail price index (RPI) is a retail price comparison of a "basket" of goods and services representative of purchases of international officials at a duty station. Since these indices pertain to a special group of internationally recruited personnel whose expenditures may include direct import of goods, they cannot, be used as cost-of-living indices for the general population in a particular city. |
