Land Degradation and Land Use/Cover Data Sources:
The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) collects environmental
data from the countries biennially with the help of the Questionnaire
on environment statistics (http://unstats.un.org/unsd/environment/questionnaire2004.htm).
The “Land” section of the questionnaire asks for national
data on land use/land cover and land degradation. This report examines
the global availability of country level land degradation and land use/cover
data that could be used to complement questionnaire responses and to
assist the UNSD in data validation. Any judgments related to the usability
of existing data sources are made from that point of view. The report
is made publicly available, since it can serve as a useful synopsis
for other purposes.
