Main Environmental Indicators
Statistics on Water and Waste are based on official statistics that had been supplied by national statistical offices and/or ministries of environment (or equivalent institutions) in countries in response to the biennial UNSD/UNEP questionnaire. They were complemented by data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on water resources. Data on EU and OECD member and partner countries are from OECD and Eurostat.
Statistics on Air Pollution are compiled from data from the UNSD/UNEP Questionnaire 2004 and supplemented with data from United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Statistics on Climate Change are from UNFCCC except for CO2 emission that is from the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Indicator Database. The sources of data on forests and agricultural land are the MDG database and FAO.
Environment statistics is still in an early stage of development in many countries, and data are often sparse. The indicators selected here are those of relatively good quality and geographic coverage. Information on data quality and comparability is given at the end of each table together with other important metadata.
Besides the main environmental indicators, selected water and waste time series indicators and select waste indicators at city level are also compiled from UNSD/UNEP questionnaire responses.
