CoordinationDue to the multidisciplinary and multifaceted nature of environment statistics there are many international and regional organizations, non-governmental organization, specialized agencies, secretariats of international conventions, research institutes and others that are engaging in the collection and compilation of environmental information. The Environment Statistics Section has developed close collaboration with many of these in order to develop synergies, to avoid duplication of efforts and to reduce the burden caused to the countries by international data requests. The Statistical Commission at its 34th session empowered UNSD to convene an Intersecretariat Working Group on Environment Statistics (IWG-Env), to coordinate and harmonize the development of standards, methods, data collection and capacity building programmes in environment statistics and thus firmly anchor environment statistics as part of official statistics both at the national and international levels. The permanent members of the IWG-Env are those organisations/agencies that have a well-established international programme on environment statistics, including direct and regular collection of comprehensive environment statistics from countries. Other organisations/agencies and countries with experience in specific areas of environment statistics will be associated as required and will be invited on a subject matter basis. The IWG-Env maintains strong collaboration with other groups active in related fields, in particular with the London Group on Environment Accounting and with those working on indicators of sustainable development. The Reports of the Intersecretariat Working Group on Environmental Statistics have been presented at the 35th, 36th, and 37th sessions of the Statistical Commission.
Current members of the Working Group are the United Nations Statistics Division, the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Statistical Office of the European Communities (Eurostat) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The secretariat of the Working Group is the United Nations Statistics Division. |
