Energy has been identified by the United Nations Statistics Division as a priority area for implementation of the SEEA. SEEA-Energy, a SEEA 'sub-system', is under development to provide compilers and analysts with agreed concepts, definitions, classifications, tables, and accounts for energy and energy-related air emission accounts.

SEEA-Energy expands and elaborates on guidance on accounting included in the International Recommendations for Energy Statistics (IRES). IRES, developed by UNSD in cooperation with the Oslo Group on Energy Statistics and the Intersecretariat Working Group on Energy Statistics, provides a set of international recommendations for the collection, compilation and dissemination of energy statistics. IRES was adopted by the United Nations Statistical Commission at its 42nd session in 2011.
