2004 Energy Yearbook

Introduction

The Energy Statistics Yearbook 2004 is a comprehensive collection of international energy statistics prepared by the United Nations Statistics Division, available now on its printed version. The information contained in the Yearbook is also available in PDF File. It is the forty-eighth in a series of annual compilations which commenced under the title World Energy Supplies in Selected Years, 1929-1950 (1). It updates the statistical series shown in the previous issue. Supplementary series of monthly and quarterly data on production of energy may be found in the Monthly Bulletin of Statistics (2).

The principal objective of the Yearbook is to provide a global framework of comparable data on long term trends in the supply of mainly commercial primary and secondary forms of energy. Data for each type of fuel and aggregate data for the total mix of commercial fuels are shown for individual countries and areas and are summarized into regional and world totals. The data are compiled primarily from the annual energy questionnaire distributed by the United Nations Statistics Division and supplemented by official national statistical publications. Where official data are not available or are inconsistent, estimates are made by the Statistics Division based on governmental, professional or commercial materials. Estimates include, but are not limited to, extrapolated data based on partial year information, use of annual trends, trade data based on partner country reports, breakdowns of aggregated data as well as analysis of current energy events and activities.

This issue of the Yearbook contains data in original and common units (coal equivalent, oil equivalent, joules) for the years 2001-2004. By referring to previous volumes of the publication, a time series can be established from 1950 to the present. In addition to the basic tables showing production, trade, stock changes, bunkers, and consumption, information is included on various other topics such as:

(a) Principal importers and exporters of coal, crude petroleum and natural gas for the years 2003 and 2004;

(b) The capacity of petroleum refineries, natural gas liquids plants and electric generating plants by type;

(c) The ratio of crude petroleum reserves to petroleum production (R/P ratio);

(d) The new and renewable sources of energy: biofuels, wastes, fuelwood, charcoal, bagasse, and electricity generated from hydro, solar, wind, tide, wave and geothermal sources;

(e) Heat produced in combined heat and power plants generating electricity and useful heat in a single installation, district heating plants and geothermal sources and nuclear power plants.

The information contained in the Yearbook is also available in electronic PDF format. Requests for information should be directed to the United Nations Statistics Division.
