The United Nations Statistics Division is in the process of elaborating the development of standards and methods to assist national statistical offices and other producers of statistics in the collection, compilation and dissemination of statistics from population registers.

As part of its work on vital statistics, the United Nations Statistics Division recently issued the Principles and Recommendations for a Vital Statistics System, Revision 2, which contain relevant concepts and definitions.
