The United Nations Statistics Division is the primary agency responsible at an international level for collecting statistics generated by population registers.

Increasingly population registers are becoming a primary source of official population statistics. In some countries they are used to replace traditional, questionnaire-based censuses, either by themselves, or in combination with other data sources.
