Mortality

Collection and dissemination of data from the Demographic Yearbook

The United Nations Statistics Division collects data on mortality through the Demographic Yearbook data collection system.

The two questionnaires used are:

-
Vital Statistics Questionnaire (PDF 128 KB)
-
Population Census Questionnaire (PDF 146 KB)

Twelve tables on statistics of infant deaths, deaths and life tables, cross-tabulated by social and demographic characteristics such as age, sex, marital status, occupation, etc. are collected through these questionnaires. These tables are then disseminated in the regular issues and special editions of the Demographic Yearbook dedicated to the topics of mortality and population census statistics. Detailed statistics on mortality have been published by the United Nations Statistics Division in two issues of the Demographic Yearbook: 1996 and 1985. Print copies of the Demographic Yearbook can be purchased through the UN Publications Order Form.

The most recent technical reports review the collection and dissemination of data on mortality within the Demographic Yearbook.
