Technical notes:

The population distribution refers to the percentage of the total population in urban and rural areas, respectively. The estimates presented refer to the population as of 1 July of the given year. The annual rates of urban and rural population change are an average for the five-year period 2005-2010 and refer to the rate at which the rural and urban populations are increasing or decreasing (negative sign) on average in each year within the five-year period, expressed as a percentage of the base population.

The urban-rural classification of population in internationally published statistics follows the national census definition, which differs from one country or area to another. National definitions are usually based on criteria that may include any of the following: size of population in a locality, population density, distance between built-up areas, predominant type of economic activity, legal or administrative boundaries and urban characteristics, such as specific services and facilities.

Estimates and projections of urban and rural populations are made by the Population Division of the United Nations Secretariat and published every two years. These estimates and projections are based on national census or survey data that have been evaluated and, whenever necessary, adjusted for deficiencies and inconsistencies.
