UNAIDS, 2004 Report on the global AIDS epidemic, 4th global report (UNAIDS/04.16E, June 2004). Table 1.

Footnotes

(1) Population-based survey with HIV prevalence measurement will be conducted in the near future.
(2) New surveillance has been conducted recently but the results were not available for inclusion in the estimation process.

Technical notes

The estimated number of adults living with HIV/AIDS and the percentage of women among adults living with HIV/AIDS are obtained from a report prepared by UNAIDS and WHO in 2004. The data provided are summarized from the individual country epidemiological fact sheets, which are the collaborative efforts of UNAIDS, WHO and national AIDS programmes or other national authorities.

The estimated number of adults living with HIV/AIDS includes all persons aged 15-49 infected with HIV, whether or not they have developed symptoms of AIDS, alive at the end of 2003. Percentage of women among those living with HIV/AIDS is calculated for adults aged 15-49.
