Technical notes:

Estimates and projections of the annual population growth rate and of the urban and rural populations are made by the Population Division of the United Nations Secretariat and published every two years. These estimates and projections are based on national census or survey data that have been evaluated and, whenever necessary, adjusted for deficiencies and inconsistencies.

The annual population growth rate refers to the rate at which the population is increasing or decreasing (negative sign) in a given year, expressed as a percentage of the base population. The rate is an average for the five-year period 2005-2010.

The percentage of the total population in urban areas refers to the population as of 1 July of the given year.

The urban-rural classification of population in internationally published statistics follows the national census definition, which differs from one country or area to another. National definitions are usually based on criteria that may include any of the following: size of population in a locality, population density, distance between built-up areas, predominant type of economic activity, legal or administrative boundaries and urban characteristics, such as specific services and facilities.

The sex ratio among international migrants refers to the estimated number of female international migrants per 100 male international migrants. The ratio is based on the estimates of the international migrant stock by sex produced by the Population Division of the United Nations Secretariat using a variety of sources. As far as possible, estimates of the international migrant stock are based on the foreign-born population captured in censuses through questions on place of birth. However, in some countries information on place of birth is not captured in the national census. In such instances, citizenship information, where available, is used for the identification of international migrants. In countries where population statistics are routinely derived from population registers or registers of foreigners, data on the stock of foreign-born persons or on the number of foreigners, are obtained from those registers.
