Request: According to COFOG, where should the control of lotteries and gambling be classified?

Decision: The described function of the government can be allocated to the following COFOG class:

08.6.0 Recreation, culture and religion n.e.c.

The definition of this class includes "administration, operation or support of activities such as formulation, administration, coordination, and monitoring of overall policies. plans, programmes and budgets for the promotion of sport, recreation, culture and religion" and " preparation and enforcement of legislation and standards for the provision of recreational and cultural services".

The above interpretation is given on the basis of the revised Classification of the Functions of Government (COFOG), currently available in draft, as approved by the UN Statistical Commission in March 1999.
