National Classifications

(NAE)

Country / Area: Dominican Republic

Classification category: Activity classifications

General information
1 (a)Name of the current national classification (full name in official national languages and in English with acronyms in brackets, should be given)It does not apply.
1 (b)In which language(s) is the classification available? The most relevant differences arrive from the breakdown of activities, from which we could not obtain detailed information during the process of use of the classification of economic activities. Another difference between ISIC and our Economic Activities Nomenclature has been established for analytical and methodological reasons, in which different manufacturing activities were divided into local and free zones, bacause the last ones only provided for external markets.

Relationship to international standards
3 (a)Is this classification based on (or linked to) an international standard classification? If yes, please describe.Central Bank of the Dominican Republic, National Accounts and Economic Statistics Department.
3 (b)Is the classification structure identical to the international standard or, if not, how does it differ? (e.g. have additional levels been added to the international standard or have changes been made within the level of the international structure, such as aggregations or additional breakdowns)Olga Díaz Mora

3 (e)If no links to international classifications exist or no international standard is used, please state if there are plans to use international norms in the future. The actual economic activities nomenclature is being evaluated to know the flexibility it should have, so satellite accounts could be elaborated. This has been of particular concern in the specific case of the Tourism Satellite Account of the Dominican Republic, because the CPC does not present the required classifications to make the total adjustment to this specific phenomenon.

Classification uses
4 (a)Please state for which statistical purposes (surveys etc.) this classification is used and if there are users outside of the Statistical Office. Please indicate at which level the classification is used for data collection and for data publishing. Our economic activity classification is actually used by the Monetary Programming Department of the Central Bank, for the classification of the lending portfolio by economic activity.

Implementation / revision status
5 (d)Name of former (previous) national classification (full name in both national tongue and in English with acronyms in brackets, should be given)To this moment, explanatory notes have not been elaborated, but we are working on a recommendation about the proper flexibility that classifications should have in order to facilitate the adjustment of satellite accounts of the SNADR to their classification needs.
5 (e)Please describe the link of the former classification to international classificationsDuring the process of the economic activity classification in the SNADR, we encountered the problem due to the characteristics of the Dominican economy. An important part of the manufacturing activity was directed to external markets (free zones), but they were not contemplated in ISIC, so we decided that they should be treated separately and in the same manner as we treated local industry.
5 (g)Do conversion tables exist between the former and current classification? The Internal Taxes Board uses this classification to group the declaring enterprises by activity branch.
5 (h)When was the former classification implemented? There is no alternative classification used by another institution that is internationally accepted.
5 (i)Are statistical data still collected or published according to the former classification? Please indicate if this statistical data is collected or published by the Statistical Office or elsewhere.No.

Supporting documents
6 (a)Have national explanatory notes and/or guidelines been elaborated? The previous classification in our national accounts system was the second revision of the International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC).
