Classification structure
2 (a)Please describe the structure of the classification: How many levels does the classification have? (Please provide labels, such as “Division”, “Class”) How many categories exist at each level?Our educational system is organized according to the law rules in the Pre-primary, Primary and Lower secondary (in one level), Upper Secondary; and Tertiary education (in one level) and Doctorate. i.e 5 levels of education. The laws for education are the base of the educational system and educational process in the Republic of Macedonia.
In the State Statistical Office (SSO), we are collecting an important data about the education of each level of education and all the data were presented according to our National educational system, but for international comparison we are using the “System of education in the Republic of Macedonia in accordance with ISCED 97”. This document is a description of the National classification compatible to ISCED 97 and is prepared by the SSO (with engagement of several years). This document was adopted by the Government of the Republic of Macedonia and was presented in the “Official Gazette” No 33 in 2003 year.

Relationship to international standards
3 (a)Is this classification based on (or linked to) an international standard classification? If yes, please describe.The National educational system is compatible to ISCED 97. It means, that we can easily provide data according to ISCED 97 classification.
3 (b)Is the classification structure identical to the international standard or, if not, how does it differ? (e.g. have additional levels been added to the international standard or have changes been made within the level of the international structure, such as aggregations or additional breakdowns)The Primary and Lower secondary education in the Republic of Macedonia is carried out in one level of education – in the same educational institutions with the mixed educational personnel and management. But, we can easy divide it in two levels – ISCED 1 and ISCED 2.
3 (c)Please describe deviations from the international standard (in terms of structure, methodology or application rules). Please use examples, if a general statement is not possible.No deviations.
3 (d)At what level of the international standard can data be reported for international comparison? (Please provide examples of programmes / indicators if reporting takes place at different levels of the classification.)We have successfully completed UOE data collection tables since 1997 (for all educational levels).
3 (e)If no links to international classifications exist or no international standard is used, please state if there are plans to use international norms in the future.For national users and purposes we are presenting the data according to our National classification of education, but for international users and purposes we are presenting the data according to ISCED.
 
Classification uses
4 (a)Please state for which statistical purposes (surveys etc.) this classification is used and if there are users outside of the Statistical Office. Please indicate at which level the classification is used for data collection and for data publishing.The State Statistical office is conducting statistical surveys for each educational level, and the data are published in the statistical releases and publications. Also, the data are available on our website. The data are also used for international purposes, for completion of UOE data collection tables and for other users.
The ISCED classification is used in other statistical surveys in the State statistical office such as Census of population, LFS, HBS, SILC, TUS and other surveys.

Also indicate the kind of use (e.g. tax offices, social security, customs, enterprise register, employment services, work permits etc.)No information.
4 (c)Please indicate if alternative classifications are used by other institutions of the economy. Are these classifications available and useful for the Statistical Office?Other alternative classifications are not used in State Statistical office.

If not yet adopted, please indicate the current state (e.g. in development, sent for approval, in printing, ready to be distributed etc.)The document “System of education in the Republic of Macedonia in accordance with ISCED 97”. was adopted by the Government of the Republic of Macedonia and was presented in the “Official Gazette” No 33 in 2003 year.
5 (b)Please state the date of use of the classification for individual statistical programmes.For national users and purposes we are presenting the data according to our National classification of education, but for international users and purposes we are presenting the data according to ISCED - for UOE questionnaire the use of ISCED 97 started since 2003.
5 (c)Are there existing plans for revision or update of the current classification?According to the changes in the laws for education and Eurostat plan for adoption of the ISCED 2011 (changes in mapping of the educational levels).
