International Family of Economic and Social Classifications

The international family of economic and social classifications is comprised of reference classifications that have been registered into the United Nations Inventory of Classifications, reviewed and approved as guidelines by the United Nations Statistical Commission or other competent intergovernmental board on such matters as economics, demographics, labour, health, education, social welfare, geography, environment and tourism. It also includes those classifications on similar subjects that are registered into the Inventory and are derived or related to the reference classifications and are primarily, but not solely, used for regional or national purposes. Other documents related to the international family of classifications:
  • Preamble (PDF file, 22 KB)
Describes the types of classifications in the family, role and obligations of the agencies and custodians

  • Basic principles (PDF file, 114 KB)
A statement of basic principles for the development, use, maintenance and revision of international standard statistical classifications

  • UN glossary of classification terms
A working document of classification terms approved by the Expert Group on International Economic and Social Classifications

The Expert Group on International Statistical Classifications is currently discussing a broadening of the Family beyond economic and social classifications. This will also entail a revision of the Best practices and similar documents in the near future.
