Methodology of the Canadian Labour Force Survey

The Canadian Labour Force Survey (LFS) is a source of monthly estimates of employment and unemployment. Following each decennial census, the LFS has undergone a sample redesign to reflect changes in population characteristics and to respond to changes in the information needs to be satisfied by the survey. The redesign program following the 2001 census culminated with the introduction of a new sample at the end of 2004. This report is a reference on the methodological and operational aspects of the LFS, covering stratification, sampling, survey operations, weighting, estimation and data quality.
