The Environment Statistics Section of the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) is engaged in the development of methodologies, data collection, technical cooperation, and coordination in the fields of environmental statistics and indicators.

Methodological work includes the elaboration of frameworks, concepts, methods, definitions, and data compilation guidelines to support the development and harmonization of national and international statistics on the environment.

Data collection is implemented through the biennial Questionnaire on Environment Statistics. Data collection was carried out in 1999, 2001, 2004, 2006 and 2008. UNSD environmental indicators derived from the data are available. UNSD will embark on the sixth round of data collection in 2010.

Technical cooperation, training and capacity building is provided through regional and sub-regional projects, international training workshops, fellowship arrangements and assistance to countries. Recent projects covered the countries of the CARICOM, ESCWA and ECOWAS regions.

Coordination of international activities in the field of environmental statistics and indicators is provided through the Intersecretariat Working Group on Environment Statistics (IWG-Env) with UNSD as the Secretariat.

ENVSTATS is the environment statistics newsletter of UNSD. Issues from 1995 are available.

Expert Group Meeting on the Framework for the Development of Environment Statistics (FDES)

New York
10-12 November, 2009

The objectives of the meeting were to discuss a conceptual framework that best supports an integrative approach to environment statistics and helps countries to establish and improve their national environment statistics systems. The meeting reviewed the UN Framework for the Development of Environment Statistics (1984) and its accompanying handbooks (1988 and 1991) and advised UNSD on the directions to take in the revision of these documents as well as on the modalities of the revision process. The conclusions of the EGM will be submitted to the 41st Session of the Statistical Commission in February 2010.
