Statistics on teachers (teaching staff) are compiled
by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO) Institute for Statistics (UIS) from data provided by
national Governments in response to UIS questionnaires.
Teachers refer to persons employed full-time or part-time in
an official capacity to guide and direct the learning experience
of pupils and students, irrespective of their qualifications or
the delivery mechanism, i.e. face-to-face and/or at a distance.
Excluded from this category are educational personnel who have
no active teaching duties (e.g. headmasters, headmistresses or
principals who do not teach) and persons who work occasionally
or in a voluntary capacity.
Definitions of second-level and third-level education are elaborated
in the 1997 International Standard Classification of Education
(ISCED 97). A concise definition of each is given under the tables
on primary and secondary education.
